Don’t Brush This Aside!
It was so simple that it was brilliant. Two entrepreneurs came up with the idea to have parties in bars while painting classic pictures. After all, everyone knows there is a direct correlation with how better you are as an artist and the amount of alcohol you’ve consumed. Unfortunately, someone had already come up with the idea, but had a more expensive business model.
Paint Nite’s founders Dan Hermann and Sean McGrail took a little over $6,000 in 2012 and turned it into a $30 million business by 2014. I’ve been watching Paint Nite grow across the country and was delighted when it finally made it to Fresno about a month ago.
How it works: Take a famous painting and some paint supplies, add a local artist and a few assistants, rent a section of a bar and sell tickets for $45 each. There are about 40-50 attendees at these events. It’s fun and easy, actually. I have absolutely no artistic ability, yet I arrived with a positive attitude to just enjoy myself. But then, I started getting into it, much to my amazement. And by the end, and yes after a few sips of an adult beverage, I ended up with a canvas painting that’s not as bad as I thought it would be. I didn’t say great, I said not as bad.
Now, if you are actually a decent artist, then you get the added benefit of having people tell you how fabulous you are. I wouldn’t know personally, I just witnessed the phenomenon.
Mainly females attend in groups, but a few of us brought our husbands who were real troopers and either had a great time, or, did a bang-up job of pretending.
I was very proud of my turtle and, although it didn’t look as great in the morning as it had the night before, it was still a super fun and educational way to learn a little more about how to play with paint and do something you might not have ever had tried otherwise.
We had so much fun that we’ve booked a second one, in the Tower District that is family friendly and none alcoholic so our kids can join us. We’ll be painting Van Gogh’s Starry Night.
If you go, try to see if there is a groupon deal. Bring friends and be prepared to just have fun no matter how your masterpiece turns out. It’s a unique experience and worth the cost. For more information go to: www.paintnite.com
