The Mysterious Jasper
Even his mother knew he was different, right from the beginning. Jasper, with his eyes still closed, unable to walk yet and with only the ability to make soft grunting noises always managed to edge out his siblings when there was food, treats or attention, to be had.
As he grew older, he too began to realize his special powers. But with his inner sweetness and humility Jasper never let it go to his head. He simply got what he wanted, when he wanted it. Nothing more and nothing less. His brothers and sisters, however, were jealous and often barked at him with threat in their tone. He did not mind. He understood what they were feeling. He understood much about how the world worked. Deep down inside, he knew he was an old soul. He understood naiveté, ambition, love and hate. He knew that to let your emotions get the better of you was detrimental to one’s own experience on earth.
When the day came to find a new home, Jasper waited patiently for a family that he wanted. The others weren’t as selective as he was. He knew just the kind of home he wanted and he would not settle for anything less.
As the sun set, he realized that he would have to find his family on his own. They may not be able to come to him. He licked his mother good-bye and disappeared into the night.
For days Jasper searched. His special abilities allowed him to take his time. From afar, he observed the behavior of many people. Some were too loud. Some were too quiet. Finally, he thought he’d found the right home, but decided to watch a little bit longer. He was glad he did. They had another dog and he watched as the father hit the dog with a rolled up newspaper. He would have none of that. No one, human or otherwise, would ever touch him in that way. His search continued.
After a very long time of being out on his own, Jasper at last found the perfect home. There were two other dogs, much smaller than he was, two girls and a mother. He would fit right in. He closed his eyes and concentrated. Suddenly he was in their back yard. He sat down and waited for the two little dogs to discover him. It didn’t take long. At first they were confused and nervous. But Jasper, with his gentle way, made them feel comforted. Soon they were playing games and frolicking about. When the family came home, they too were surprised at first. But seeing how Jasper fit in so well they sensed that he was meant to stay.
Jasper shared many adventures with the family. He went on long walks and sometimes even long trips. They took him to a spa every so often, which we was not particularly fond of. However, they seemed to think it was good for him so he did not complain. As the family grew older so did Jasper. He lived a very long and happy life with them, each enjoying the other even into retirement.
